The University of Oran was founded as Mohamed Ibn Ahmed in September 2014 under Executive Decree No. 14-261 of September 22, 2014, establishing the University of Oran 2. It emerged from the division of the University of Oran, which was originally established in 1967.
The Fighter Mohamed Ben Ahmed – Known as Major (Si Moussa)
Mohamed Ben Ahmed, known as Major Si Moussa, was born on July 2, 1920, in Oran.
He pursued his studies at the official French-language school, obtaining an elementary certificate and excelling beyond his level. In 1939, he became a teacher in the city of Siq but later left teaching to move to Oran, where he engaged in trade to ensure his freedom of movement and activity. He was one of the founders of the Al Falah School, which aimed to teach Arabic and Islamic religion in Oran.
His first involvement was in the Association of Educational and Social Reform Researchers in 1940, led by Sheikh Abd el-Hamid Ibn Badis. Later, he joined the ranks of the Democratic Union "AHBAB EL-Bayan".

In 1952, he ran in local elections and began working in Oran alongside Ben Ahmed Abdelghani and Souaih El Hawari within the Harakat Intissar El Houriyat Democratique movement. When the party was dissolved, he witnessed and endured the sorrow of the first bombings of November 1954, along with his companions:
Ahmed Ben Bella, Al-Haj Bin Ala, Ahmed Zabana, Hamou Boutlilis, Souaih Al-Hawari, Larbi Ben M’hidi, Abdel Hafidh Boussouf, Fartas Mohame, And others—key figures in the western front of the resistance.
In 1960, he was appointed Commander of the Algerian-Tunisian border and the Eastern Border Command, responsible for organizing and structuring the National Liberation Army (ALN) into combat units to confront the enemy along the Challe and Morice lines. He also coordinated military operations between the northern and southern regions along the Algerian-Tunisian border.
After the ceasefire on March 19, 1962, Major Si Moussa contributed to the unification and reconciliation of national, territorial, and popular ranks, strengthening the unity of the Algerian people.
The freedom fighter and activist Mohamed Ben Ahmed, known as Major Si Moussa, passed away on Tuesday evening in April 2004, at the age of 84.
